215 attend Jeffrey Zaslow’s talk at Clearwater Library

Jeffrey Zaslow, Wall Street Journal columnist and co-author of SPC’s “One Book, One College” selection The Last Lecture, visited the Clearwater Campus library on Nov. 10.

The book was inspired by the final lecture given by Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch on Sept. 18, 2007. He died the following year at age 47.

Kim Wolff, Program Director of the Library, and Bobbi Cullinan, Administrative Specialist II, were determined to get Zaslow to speak at the college, despite having no money in the library budget for guest speakers. Wolff tried unsuccessfully to negotiate Zaslow’s steep $20,000 speaking fee with his agent.

That is when Cullinan decided to e-mail the author directly and both were surprised when he responded. Zaslow, who already was going to be in Venice for a talk and book-signing, volunteered to speak at SPC for free.

“He said, ‘Randy would have done this,’” Cullinan said.

As a way to thank him, the college gave him a pocket watch with a quote from the book, “The inspiration and the permission to dream is huge,” and “St. Petersburg College, 2010,” inscribed on the back.

SPC Fine Arts Students' Pop-Up Books Hit the Road

Design students at St. Petersburg College’s Clearwater
Campus have created a series of pop-up books so creative
and compelling that examples will visit Florida colleges,
universities and libraries during a year-long tour.

The exhibition, POP: Books as Exploration of Design,
Math and Text, will be on tour for a year, ending in
September 2011. Each of seven scheduled displays
will include 15 different pop-up books. Subjects
range from The Little Mermaid to The Cat in
the Hat, as well as original works of fiction and
tributes to World War II heroes.

The pop-up books resulted when SPC
visual arts faculty members decided to
create a project that would engage
and challenge Design I students. The
resulting class emphasized principles
of traditional two-dimensional
medium while introducing three-dimensional
design.

The projects challenged students
to employ critical thinking skills as they applied
story writing concepts to the pop-up form. Also, they had to
employ other academic skills as they combined storytelling
with math and geometry.
The resulting pop-up books, produced with scissors, X-acto
knives, rulers, needles and thread, bone folders and other
tools, had to be a three-dimensional design that successfully
told stories.

The project began in Fall 2009. So far, about 70 pop-up
books have been produced by students in three semesters
of Design I classes.

C-SPAN to broadcast astronaut’s SPC speech

"C-SPAN, the cable television company that provides live start-to-finish television coverage of government proceedings and other content, will be at Tropicana Field on Saturday, May 8, to provide coverage of astronaut Nicole Stott’s speech to SPC graduates.

C-SPAN usually covers congressional hearings and other government-related events, but it also provides coverage of selected college commencement speeches every spring. A C-SPAN spokesman said the company had reviewed more than 500 upcoming commencement speakers and had selected about a dozen to cover live. Stott’s SPC speech was one of those selected.

The coverage is expected to include the entire speech and will be carried live, starting at 10 a.m. It is the first time C-SPAN has ever covered an event at SPC.

C-SPAN describes itself as a private, non-profit company, created in 1979 by the cable television industry as a public service. It says its mission is to provide public access to the political process.

The company receives no government funding; operations are funded by fees paid by cable and satellite affiliates who carry C-SPAN programming.
Stott is a Clearwater native who graduated from Clearwater High School and attended SPC. Her first NASA space mission was last year, when she spent about four months on the International Space Station."

Important changes to the OCLC NetLibrary Service and to the FirstSearch Service.

OCLC and EBSCO Publishing have announced that EBSCO has acquired the NetLibrary Division. The purchase includes the NetLibrary eBook and eAudiobook platform as well as operations and infrastructure in Boulder, Colorado. As eBooks become mainstream components of a library's eContent collections, there is increasing value to libraries to be able to integrate eBook acquisitions and delivery with other electronic databases and eJournals. EBSCO will maintain and enhance the NetLibrary platform and will also work to integrate NetLibrary eBooks into the EBSCOhost platform. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

We are also announcing an important change to our FirstSearch content services. OCLC is transitioning out of our role as reseller of vendor-owned content. Therefore we will transfer or discontinue sale of the vendor-owned databases on FirstSearch when subscriptions have ended. We will instead increase our focus for both FirstSearch and WorldCat.org on providing libraries with access to a rich set of library-owned content and increasing visibility and access to the full scope of a library's collection. We will work with libraries, publishers and other information providers to expand WorldCat.org as a comprehensive platform for eContent. As a part of this migration, EBSCO has acquired the rights to license a select number of vendor-owned databases that we currently offer on FirstSearch. Our long-term relationship with H.W. Wilson is also changing as we will work together to transition from reselling Wilson databases on FirstSearch to indexing Wilson databases in WorldCat Local over the coming months. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

Local Book Publishers Honored for Publishing Excellence

HIGHLAND CITY, FL – October 12, 2009 – On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the Florida Publishers Association (FPA) presented its 2009 President’s Book Awards to members whose books were chosen as best in 16 different categories and one special category, President’s Pick, chosen by FPA’s President, Chris Angermann, of New Chapter Publisher, Sarasota, FL.

FPA Book Awards Chair, Betsy Lampe, president of Rainbow Books, Inc., Lakeland, FL, was the mistress of ceremonies for the President’s Book Awards Banquet at The Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel on Lido Beach, Sarasota.

“While it’s quite an honor for the publishers, authors, illustrators and designers whose books won gold and silver medals” says Lampe, who also acts as the group’s association executive, “the awards also provide a new platform from which the publishers can launch new marketing efforts. Publishing is a business, and receiving industry recognition, such as winning in the FPA 2009 President’s Book Awards, can help reviewers, retailers and readers identify some great and, perhaps, previously undiscovered books.”

The evening awards banquet was part of the two-day FPA 2009 Publishing Ed-U-Conference, the theme for which was “Strategies for Success.” Participants attended presentations by nationally recognized book experts and successful independent publishers in Florida.
